Ready Made Gluten Free Iced Birthday Cakes Now Available in Newcastle
The Vanilla Iced Birthday Cake at IGA New Lambton
In another exciting first for the Newcastle area, it’s now possible to walk into a shop and purchase a ready made, affordable, fresh gluten free celebration cake! Previously the only options were a frozen slab cake at Coles and a limited range at the Cheesecake Shop. Mama Ps at Charlestown also stocks some raw vegan cakes.
Richies IGA in New Lambton are now stocking the Gilbert & Marcel range of cakes, which are made in a dedicated gluten free facility in Melbourne. Gilbert & Marcel pride themselves on providing products that represent great value and exceptional quality, without compromise on taste.
There is a selection of patty cakes as well as 4 varieties of larger cakes: Chocolate, Vanilla, Apple Crumble and Red Velvet, which are $13.49 each.
The Taste Test - Vanilla Cake
The vanilla cake was generously iced with sprinkles on the top, and served up 8 small-medium slices (it’s very sweet, so a little goes a long way). It had the consistency of a light mud cake, with a slight coconut taste which was pleasant. The cakes are dairy, nut and egg free as well, although the label does have a ‘may contain’ warning for dairy, nut and soy products.
This cake would be a great gluten free alternative to the grocery store mud cakes available at Woolies and Coles.
While coconut milk and cream are the main ingredients, the coconut taste is very mild.
