Coeliac friendly restaurants in Maitland
There are some great pubs and restaurants in the Maitland region serving up gluten free meals, although some are more coeliac aware than others. Here’s our list of places recommended by locals. If you can recommend anywhere else, let us know in the comments!
All reviews are valid at the time of the visit, however as restaurant menus and staff change over time it is important to do your own due diligence and ask your own questions to ensure that your health is protected.
Bread and Water 100% Gluten Free Cafe
Open for breakfast and lunch 7 days, Bread and Water is located at the Old Maitland Gaol in East Maitland. They were the first dedicated gluten free eatery in the Hunter region, and serve up a delicious range of gluten free cakes, slices, pies and meals.
Reviews of Bread and Water vary wildly in terms of waiting times and customer service, so be prepared for a possible interesting experience (or a fantastic experience, I think it depends on the day!) Bookings advisable, phone 4933 7213. They also now offer home delivery on their bakery products.
The George Tavern Greenhills
The George Tavern is a great spot for a casual gluten free pub meal. They have two outdoor decks with heating, two bar areas (a sports bar and the Empire Lounge) and a bistro.
A fair chunk of their menu is gluten free, including favourites like the Buffalo Chicken Wings with blue cheese sauce, and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Tenders with smoked bacon aioli. Their fries are GF.
If you mention being coeliac they will cook your meal in the separate fryer, and can even do a gluten free snitty if you call ahead.
Kids eat free every day from 5-6pm!
