Full Review

Salty’s at Swansea Bridge looks like your typical Aussie fish and chip shop from the outside. Slightly dingy, seen better days. Inside however you will find former chef Michael Douglas (no relation to the famous guy), frying up some of the most delicious gluten free fish and chips in the whole of the Newcastle and Hunter regions.

Michael has owned the store for around five years and gained experience with coeliac cooking during his years working as a chef in restaurants and aged care.

He encourages coeliacs to not be afraid to ask questions and to speak up for their needs.

The Food

We ordered the Fish & Chips For 1, which includes 1 large battered piece of fish, about a cup full of chips, a potato scallop and tartar sauce.

The golden brown house-cut chips were exactly the right ratio of crispiness to softness.

The fish was battered in a light and crispy gluten free batter which was fried and salted to heavenly perfection.

Cross-Contamination concerns

I didn’t have any symptoms after eating, and I’m fairly sensitive to contamination. However over at the Gluten Free in Newcastle Facebook group, some people have reported that they became sick after eating here during the busy summer period when staff may have made mistakes on their orders.

As always do your own research and make your own decisions. Reviews are accurate at time of publication however staff and menus can change.
